CERTIFICATE IN THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF LOCAL HISTORY

University of Kent

Are you interested in:
• Learning more about the history of Kent
• Working with other local history enthusiasts
• Researching documents and other local sources
• Studying towards a university qualification

The Certificate in the Theory and Practice of Local History is designed to meet all these interests and more. The only qualifications required are enthusiasm and an interest in local history.
Students who register for the certificate are introduced to both the ways that local history is written and how to do it themselves, through a wide range of modules which also provide opportunities for:
• working with original sources
• field work
• pursuing individual interests (within particular topics such as family, oral or maritime history)

The certificate is a two year programme which runs at Canterbury, Tonbridge and Chatham. Students may take modules at any of the three centres.
On successful completion of the certificate students may progress to the next stage of either the part-time or full-time degree programme. Students with a particular interest in local history may be particularly interested in the Diploma in Kentish History.

Of special interest to those based in London and interested in Local History may be our MA in Metropolis and Empire. The course discusses the relationship between the Metropolis (particularly London) and the Empire (particularly the British Empire) in the colonial and post-colonial periods (1700-2000). It is an interdisciplinary programme drawing on approaches from geography, history, and literature. We look at the economy, politics, society, art and architecture, and literature of the imperial power and of the territories under its control. The entry requirement is a first degree with first or upper-second class honours in the broad fields of Humanities or Geography. We actively encourage applications from suitably qualified applicants who have developed an interest in any aspect of imperial and/or metropolitan history, cultural or historical geography, cultural history, or colonial or postcolonial literature.

PART-TIME LOCAL HISTORY COURSES

University of Sussex Centre for Continuing Education

The Centre for Continuing Education (CCE) at the University of Sussex offers innovative, accessible and stimulating part-time local history courses. All CCE courses carry higher education credit and have no formal entrance requirements. Fee waivers or concessions may be available to those on low incomes or benefits.

If you'd like to get a taste of what it's like to study at University there are two 'Exploring' courses starting in June 2003: 'Exploring Brighton and Hove' and 'Exploring Medieval Churches in West Sussex'. These are taught as four linked dayschools on Fridays or Saturdays.

CCE offers a wide range of short courses (mostly running for 10 or 20 sessions) starting this autumn both on campus and at the venues of our educational partners across Sussex, including: 'From the Boers to the Beatles: Worthing in the Twentieth Century', 'Cuckfield Local History', 'Brighton and Hove House History: Architecture and Style', 'A Grand Tour of Georgian and Regency Indulgence' and 'Sussex and the First World War'.

The part-time Local History Certificate is taught on Wednesday evenings over 2 years. The overall aim is to equip you with the skills and tools to carry out independent research backed up by theoretical frameworks and to contribute to the common pool of knowledge on both a given locality and the national scene. Credits from this certificate may be used towards the part-time BA in Landscape Studies (Local History).
